2018 Cathedral Christmas Light Show

I went to downtown Sydney last Thursday to meet with a couple who are getting married next year. Maree is the daughter of Tony Calabria, the principal at one of our primary schools, St. Angela's. She’s marrying a very nice gentleman named Jeremy who works downtown as an accountant.

After meeting, we decided to see the Christmas light show projected on the Sydney Cathedral of Saint Mary. Photo 1 is a selfie in front of the cathedral before the show began, just as the sky darkened. They project lights on the façade and then do a show starting at about 8 o’clock at night.

Photos 2-5 are details right before they begin. One minute prior to the start a clock appears in the rose window and the church changes colors (photos 6-7). Candles then appear along the sides of the towers (8) that then form a heart (9).

And then we came to the story part of the presentation, which I’m not really sure was all that great. It was written by the Red Wiggles of the famous children's group who are Aussie. He also narrated the story to the Nut Cracker Music. I think it went on way too long. You can see the story in photos 10 through 18. I also didn't think the characters' actions were all that believable; it seemed to not make sense why the kid did what he did. The theme of "it’s better to give than receive" would have been better if the story made sense. Below is the full story from You Tube if you are really interested. Let me know what you think!

After the story, they offered a series of Madonnas and Child art through the ages. Some seem to work better than others, as you can see for yopurself in these images 19 through 25. I wish they would have taken into account where the images would fall on the front of the cathedral. For example, look at image number 23, the rose window obliterates half of Mary's face. It looks very odd. Same thing with image 25. Here’s a final selfie with myself, Jeremy, and Maree (27).

And on Saturday we had the Christmas party for one of our schools, Saint Angela’s. Here I am with Monica, the AP (Assistant Principal, we would call her a Vice Principal), and Tony, the principal (who’s daughter Maree is getting married to Jeremy). All in all a busy week…and it will only get busier as we get closer to Christmas!
